simple building

We have erected 45 ecological buildings to date and there are ongoing plans for the continued construction of a built environment which is ecologically respectful.

The Ecovillage Project has developed a unique construction system, environmentally sound and energy efficient. Using natural and non-toxic materials we have developed a breathing wall structure, which allows the fabric of a building to interact beneficially with people to moderate humidity and air quality. We have also experimented with straw bale construction, the Earthship system using recycled car tyres, and remain open to further new and innovative ecological solutions for the built environment.

The publication of Simply Build Green, the UK’s first technical guide to ecological housing, based on our own research and experience, has helped the Ecovillage Project become a major resource for environmental education locally, nationally and internationally.

Ecological details featured in our buildings include:

» Use of passive solar features where possible through orientation and window layout.
» Use of solar panels for domestic hot water heating.
» A district heating system using a gas condensing boiler for highest fuel efficiency.
» Super efficient insulation (U-values of 0.2 watts/m2 C in roof, walls and floors).
» Low-energy light bulbs throughout.
» Triple glazing (U=1.65 watts/m2 C).
» Cellulose insulation (made from recycled paper).
» Non-toxic organic paints and wood preservatives throughout.
» Boarding manufactured without the use of toxic glues or resins.
» Locally grown and harvested timber from managed forests.
» Local stone for skirting, patios and pathways.
» Roofing with natural clay tiles.
» Innovative 'breathing wall' construction allowing a controlled exchange of air & vapour, and eliminating the need for a conventional vapour barrier.
» Suspended timber floors for underfloor air circulation to avoid any possible build-up of radon gas.
» Isolating electrical circuits to reduce electromagnetic field stress.
» Water conservation (showers, low-flush toilets and self-closing taps).
» Collection and recycling of rainwater for garden use.
» Shared facilities (laundry, kitchens, lounges) avoiding unnecessary duplication.
» Simple timber frame construction and detailing, suitable for Self Building

Sustainable Living

Sustainable Living

On a global level there is an increasingly urgent need for positive models which demonstrate a viable, sustainable human and planetary future. Ecovillages address this need, looking at sustainability not only in environmental but also in social, economic and spiritual terms.

The ecovillage model is a conscious response to the extremely complex problem of how to transform our human settlements, whether they be villages, towns or cities, into full-featured sustainable communities, harmlessly integrated into the natural environment.

Over the last twelve years ecovillage principles have be applied equally to urban and to rural settings, to both developing and over-developed countries, providing solutions to human and social needs, while at the same time protecting the environment and offering an enhanced quality of life for all.

The study and application of the ecovillage model is not only for ecologists. The model must be presented [to the public] in a systemic way, in a non-linear methodology, to generate a critical mass and a point of transition.

Ecovillages can take people out of poverty and create jobs through the sense and spirit of community. They can restore human dignity in a profound way.

The Findhorn Community, which began in 1962 in a caravan park in northeast Scotland, is known internationally for its experiments with new models of holistic and sustainable living. Cooperation and co-creation with nature have always been prime aspects of the community's work, ever since it became famous in the late sixties for its remarkable and beautiful gardens grown in adverse conditions on the sand dunes of the Findhorn peninsula.

The Findhorn Foundation, established by the community in 1972, is a major centre of holistic education conducting programmes for over 4,500 residential visitors a year from over 50 countries. Today it is the heart of what has become one of largest holistic communities in the world and is the centre of this rapidly developing ecovillage.

Since 1981 the Foundation has been involved in the development of the Ecovillage Project as a natural continuation of the community's work with nature. A number of other organisations within the community work in partnership with the Foundation to help create and develop the Findhorn Ecovillage Project.

The Findhorn ecovillage is a tangible demonstration of the links between the spiritual, social and economic aspects of life and is a synthesis of the very best of current thinking on sustainable human settlements. It is a constantly evolving model providing solutions to human and social needs, while at the same time working in partnership with the environment to offer an enhanced quality of life for all.

A rich and diverse social fabric has emerged within the community over its four decades of existence. The human scale of the experiment makes community participation and involvement an integral part of the Ecovillage Project. The community has been involved in the erection of buildings, a wind turbine and other physical projects as well as the development of community policy. Experiments with pay and remuneration, festivals and celebrations, decision-making, governance and leadership, continue to evolve through our community life.

ecovillage

In 1994 a community supported agriculture scheme called EarthShare, based on organic and biodynamic farming methods, was established to increase our use of local produce as well as to enhance the quality of our food. The scheme has expanded from 5 to 15 acres, spread over three sites. Currently it provides more than 70% of the community's fresh food requirements and supplies 200 individual households.

While EarthShare provides for the fruit and vegetable needs of the community, organic milk, cheeses, eggs and meat are produced by Wester Lawrenceton farm which covers a 95-acre area overlooking Findhorn bay and the Moray firth. With cows, sheep, chickens and dairy facilities, the farm is providing solutions to reducing food miles, while combining the best of traditional methods with 21st century technology. EarthShare joins in efforts to raise public awareness of the dangers of GM foods.
